Grand Pocket Orchestra and Working Man Super Heroes

A Kid Hereafter at HWCH by Ian Oliver

Working Man Super Heroes is what my big sis mis-called Hard Working Class Heroes festival – she also remarked once that she really liked that band The Arcade Monkeys. She’s gas.

HWCH was loads of fun over the weekend. I have to admit to being a bit apprehensive about it all being in the one venue, but it worked out really well. Had a great weekend and am in proper bits now. Have a look at nialler9, UnaRocks and Miss Lili’s pages for run downs and pics. Also check out our own Ian Oliver who took some great snaps over the weekend, such as the one of Danish A Kid Hereafter who I stumbled upon on Saturday of the festival, only caught two songs and was regretting not being there earlier. Hope they come back to Dublin soon.

Also playing over the weekend at the festival were Grand Pocket Orchestra, who joined us last week on the show for a bit of banter and singing through loo roll. Honestly! Bobby Hi-Fi said they were great at hwch, but I have to admit to being a bit enthralled by Cathy Davey, whom I’d never seen before, and didn’t make it to their set. Boo to the indie hour, boo!

On the show last week, Paddy, Peter and Bronwyn came down with bags full of glockenspeils, melodicas and the aforementioned empty loo roll, and played a few tunes for us while giving us the background of Grand Pocket Orchestra. We heard of a drunken holiday somewhere down the country that led to the creation of songs and a new band. We were told tales of mossphere, mohawks and melodicas, and it was all rather fun.

The music on the show was all HWCH bands – we started the show with the awesome Acunamanacana from Stoat, Those Songs from The Terribles, No Bother from Ten Past Seven, Coronation Street from Michael Knight and Nialler9 recommended You Are Welcome in My House by Betamax Format.

So here you are – I’m off to bed with a hwch induced flu. Sniffle.
