Musical Youth

October 24, 2007 at 12:11 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Myself and Nialler recorded the 8th Nialler9 podcast last night. One of the tracks on this month’s podcast is Let Me Down Easy from Derrick Harriot. When we were researching Harriot for background information, I saw that he produced something of Big Youth, who I momentarily confused with Musical Youth – an entirely different kettle of reggae-tinged fish. Nialler couldn’t remember Musical Youth (apparently my rubbish rendition of Pass The Dutchie wasn’t ringing any bells) and so it was off to the internet, where we unearthed this video gem of the pop ska kids. Look at the size of the little kid’s telecaster!!

Class!

Incidentally, the October podcast is up and ready to download.

If he didn’t remember Pass the Dutchie then he’s not going to remember that they also did the theme tune to the Jim’ll Fix It show on BBC.

I’ve 3 or 4 of their seven inches at home and I can digitise them if you want to do a Musicla Youth special.

One of them is in prison for murder i believe.

No way! I don’t remember them doing the jim’ll fix it tune! Woah, a musical youth special. There’s an idea…

Just give me the word and i can dig them out of the vaults.

Matt wrote: “One of them is in prison for murder i believe.” It’s even sadder, Patrick Waite (bass player, red shirt) died in 1993, when he was awaiting court appearance for drug charges. But he never killed anyone!

The “Jim’ll Fix It” tune is on the “Never Gonna Give You Up” 7″, the only MY 7″ that had three tracks on it. More info on the MY website: http://www.musicalyouth.net 🙂

    Nathan,

Big Up. Thanks for clearing that up. I obviously got the details a little bit mixed up. I ‘ve always been a fan of the youth and have most of their seven inches.

Hey Nathan – thanks for that, I wasn’t sure about the details either.

Hey Matt – we never did the digitalising thing. You up for it this January? We can do an indie meets vinyl musical youth special podcast or something.

I just love the entire band particularly Kelvin. The music always brings back the good memeries of the 80’s.

Maybe a late reply, but if you ever want to do a special about Musical Youth, why not contact the boys themselves? I can make sure you guys connect…

I’ve got quite a few of their records as well, including their final flop “Let’s Go To The Moon”, written and produced by Eddie Grant…
