Super Extra Bonus Shock

February 28, 2008 at 1:36 pm (The Show) (, )

I am delighted about the result of last night’s Choice Music Prize. If you’ve visited this blog before, you probably know that I am a Super Extra Bonus Party fan. I’m wearing their T-shirt right now.

I did not expect them to win last night – not because I don’t love their album or think it wasn’t deserving of the prize. But, like Nialler, I really didn’t think that 12 people would all agree on it being the Irish album of the year, as I thought its eclectism would be too polarizing.

There is a lot of debate this morning about the shock of SEBP winning. I was sure Adrian Crowley was going to walk away with it, and I would have been very happy if he had done so.

Personal feelings aside, the reason I think it’s so wonderful that SEBP won last night is that I feel it shows there is room in Ireland to do something different with music, to push the boundaries and to dance like a total loon while you do it.

Have a look at Sinead’s blog for her take on the night, head over to UnaRocks who gives an insight into the judges’ side of things, and over at nialler9 there’s a brilliant video of the acceptance speech.

Huge congratulations to the lads, commiserations to all the other acts nominated who put on a great show, well done to all the judges, and fair play to Jim Carroll and Dave Reid for putting the whole shebang together.

3 things for the weekend…

Dry County – we salute you

Here are my three top choices for what to do on Saturday the 9th of February in Dublin. Where will you spend yours?

First up, there’s Dry County at POGO in Crawdaddy, with support from Neon Love DJs. That’s kicking off around 11pm, it’s a tenner in, and it will be a cracking night. I love Dry County, and they’re class live. Neon Love DJs will have you bopping like crazed electronic indie kids late into the night as well. Sound.

SugarLips – yum!

SugarLips (issue 2) is hitting The Boom Boom Room up near Parnell Square as well, with three very varied and very excellent acts. For €8, your ears can enjoy Hybrasil, Story of Hair and Sarsparilla from 8pm onwards. Sweet! (geddit? Sweet? Candy for your Ears? No?)

SEBP – their owl is mad.

If you’re not into pogo-ing or you have to avoid sugar due to a blogging diet, head over to Whelan’s where Super Extra Bonus Party are celebrating the launch of their Everything Flows EP, which features remixes from Cadence Weapon, Jape and NouveauNoise. It’s going to be bloody brilliant. Support comes from the aforementioned NouveauNoise, as well as Captain Moonlight who graced the indie hour last week. It’s a tenner in, and I can confirm that the newest line of SEBP t-shirts will be available (featuring the panda head this time) as well as the bright blue gorgeous vinyl Everything Flows EP.

It’s all good, so you may have to flip a coin to decide where to head to! Hope y’all enjoy yourselves anyway.

The mp3 of Thursday’s indie hour, when we were joined by the really lovely Cathy Davey will be up on the blog shortly…

A ladybug

A lovely time was had last night with Gavin Glass sans The Holy Shakers – the show will be available for download by Monday morning.

Looking forward to tonight’s gig in Traffic which Declan Kaboogie told us about last night. DJ PCP and T-woc will be opening the night sometime after 10.30pm, handing over the reins to Warrior Queen and The Bug to take us through til 2.30am. I’ve re-read what I just wrote and it sounds like an Mary Ann Hobbs script. Anyway, Kaboogie will be opening the traffic doors to you at 10.30pm, it’s €13 before midnight and €15 after.

Might pop into The Ballroom of Romance on my way to Traffic this evening for the 70th Ballroom in The Lower Deck, always a good night, and you get a free cd of each of the bands. Sweet!

Heading to Crawdaddy tomorrow night to catch The Aliens and Super Extra Bonus Party.

Hurray for the weekend.
